In July 2021, we initiated a petition to formally recognize the intersection as "Pride Corner on Whyte." The petition, which highlighted the area's significance as a safe space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, quickly gained over 7,000 signatures (CBC).

Official Proclamation

In May 2022, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi officially proclaimed the intersection as Pride Corner on Whyte, acknowledging its importance to Edmonton’s 2SLGBTQIA+ history and culture. This recognition marked a significant milestone in the city's journey towards inclusivity (Global News).

Safety Concerns and Threats

Throughout 2022, Pride Corner on Whyte faced several safety challenges:

  • September 2022: A man was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and uttering threats after approaching the gathering with a baseball bat (Global News).

  • Online Threats: Organizers reported receiving online threats, including a gun threat during a livestream, prompting increased safety measures and police investigations (CBC).

In 2023, we encountered legal challenges:

  • Restraining Orders: Multiple civil restraining orders were filed against organizer Claire Pearen, alleging harassment during protests. Two of these orders were dismissed, with one judge noting the situation involved two groups expressing opposing views. These filings appeared to be efforts to stifle our advocacy work (Global News).
